Identification
How can I identify a coin from a photo with HeriBase? #
In the HeriBase app, choose coin identification and photograph both sides with the entire coin in focus. The result is a suggested match: check its date, lettering, design and mint mark against your coin before using it.
What to know
The entire coin should be visible and in focus, with even lighting and limited glare. A visual match still needs to be checked against the item.
What to do
Compare the date, lettering, design and mint mark with the result. If key details do not match, retake the photos or ask for further help before relying on the identification.
Photo identification guide ↗How accurate are coin identification and value estimates from a photo? #
In our documented 12-coin comparison, HeriBase identified all 12 basic coin types and correctly matched both type and target variety for 10 of 12 samples (83.33%). This is a result for that sample, not an overall accuracy rate. The test did not measure valuation, grading or authentication accuracy.
What to know
The test used public coin photos, an AI-suggested sample list and linked PCGS references. Results can differ with other coins, varieties, lighting or photo quality. Recognizing the basic type does not mean every variety detail is correct.
What to do
Check the date, mint mark and variety, then account for condition before comparing values. Seek an in-hand assessment if an unresolved detail could materially affect a purchase or sale.
Identification and expert evaluation ↗ 12-coin results and scoring definitions ↗ Test method and scope ↗The identification looks wrong. What should I do? #
If a HeriBase result does not match your coin or banknote, retake clear photos of both sides and compare the lettering, date and design. If it still looks wrong, send the photos and result to support rather than relying on the suggested match.
What to know
Glare, blur and incomplete views can hide details needed for a useful match. A suggested identification is not confirmation of authenticity.
What to do
Keep the item fully visible in even lighting. If the result still does not match, send support images of both sides and a screenshot of the result.
Why is my coin or banknote not recognized? #
HeriBase may not recognize an item when the photo is blurred, details are obscured or no suitable match is available. Try clear photos of both sides; a failed identification alone does not mean the item is rare or counterfeit.
What to know
A failed match does not establish that an item is rare or counterfeit.
What to do
Try one item at a time against a plain background, with clear images of both sides. If it still fails, contact support. Do not clean or alter the item to improve recognition.
Can a photo tell me whether a coin is made of silver or gold? #
Start by scanning both sides of the coin in HeriBase to get a suggested identification and check the recorded composition where available. A photo cannot confirm the metal in your particular coin. If the result is unclear, you can request an in-app human appraisal; unresolved questions about metal or authenticity may require in-person examination or physical testing.
What to know
Gold-colored coins may contain no gold, and silver-colored coins may be made from other metals. Catalog specifications are not measurements of your item.
What to do
Scan the coin in the app, compare its date, mint mark and design with the result, then check the recorded composition against its measured weight and dimensions. If there is a discrepancy, submit clear photos and your question for an in-app human appraisal after checking the fee. If uncertainty remains, arrange an in-person examination or suitable metal testing; a remote opinion cannot verify composition by itself.
Gold-colored dollars versus real gold ↗Can I identify a coin and its value by comparing pictures? #
Yes—pictures can help you identify a coin and begin checking its value. Try scanning both sides in HeriBase, review the suggested match and check any available reference price. Confirm the date, mint mark, variety and condition before using that price; an app reference is not a guaranteed selling price.
What to know
Small differences in dates, mint marks and varieties can affect identification. Lighting can also hide wear or surface problems, and a price shown beside a photo may be an asking price rather than a completed sale.
What to do
Start with an app scan, then compare both sides, inscriptions and distinguishing details with the result. Check recent completed sales for coins with the same issue and similar condition. If the identification or price basis is unclear, consider an in-app human appraisal after checking the fee. If photos cannot resolve a material question about authenticity or condition, seek an in-person examination.
Photo identification steps ↗Can HeriBase help identify Asian and other world coins? #
Yes. HeriBase supports world-coin identification, including Asian coins. In our documented samples, it correctly identified the 1964 Tokyo Olympics 1,000 yen, but assigned an incorrect added-Kansu-characters variety to the 1914 Yuan Shih-kai dollar. These examples show why both the basic type and variety need checking.
What to know
These two samples do not establish coverage or accuracy for every Asian issue. Compare the inscriptions, date and distinguishing design details rather than accepting a similar portrait alone.
What to do
Photograph both sides with readable lettering and details. If the coin cannot be identified or the result does not match, send the photos and result to support.
Photo identification guide ↗ Japan: 1964 Tokyo Olympics sample ↗ China: 1914 Yuan Shih-kai variety comparison ↗How can I identify different national park quarters? #
Start by scanning both sides of the quarter in HeriBase for a suggested identification. Compare the result with the reverse design, site name and date on your coin. The America the Beautiful series ran from 2010 to 2021 and includes national parks and other national sites; identifying the design alone does not establish a value premium.
What to know
The program ran from 2010 to 2021 and featured national parks and other national sites. Identifying the design does not by itself establish a collectible premium.
What to do
Photograph both sides in the app and check the suggested site name and year against the coin. Check the mint mark, finish and condition before using any available reference price. If the result remains unclear, submit close-ups and a specific question for an in-app human appraisal after checking the fee; unresolved questions about authenticity or condition may need in-person examination.
Can I use HeriBase to identify a coin in my browser without downloading the app? #
No. HeriBase currently requires its mobile app for photo identification and does not offer browser-based image uploads for that purpose. The website provides guides and support; download the app to photograph and identify your coin.
What to know
Identification takes place in the mobile app; the website provides guides and support.
What to do
Download HeriBase, photograph both sides and compare the suggested result with your coin.
Download for iOS — App Store ↗ Download for Android — Google Play ↗How can I choose a reliable coin identification app? #
Choose by your main need: try HeriBase for ongoing free scans, collection management and access to paid human appraisal; consider CoinSnap for scanning speed and export options, or Coinara if a one-time purchase is your priority. Before paying, test coins you can verify and check the current free limits and subscription terms.
What to know
Our comparisons document these features and limited identification samples, not a universal accuracy ranking. A correct coin type does not guarantee a correct variety or price. HeriBase human appraisal costs extra; purchase terms can change.
What to do
Start with HeriBase’s available free scans. Check the date, mint mark and variety against your coin, then try the collection features you need. If comparing apps, use the same clear photos and known references. Confirm free allowances, renewal terms and any separate appraisal fees before paying.
HeriBase, CoinSnap and Coinara comparison ↗ Coin identifier app comparison ↗Is HeriBase a Google coin identifier? #
No. HeriBase is independent of Google and is not a Google product. A Google search result linking to HeriBase does not imply Google ownership or endorsement; HeriBase identification is provided through its own app.
What to know
Finding HeriBase through Google Search does not imply Google ownership or endorsement.
What to do
Use HeriBase’s own app for identification and its official website for product information and support.

How can I find out how much my coin is worth? #
Start by scanning both sides of your coin in HeriBase and checking any available reference price. Confirm the issue and condition, then compare recent completed sales of similar coins. If the price seems unclear or inconsistent, send the result to platform support or request an in-app human appraisal; a reference price is not a guaranteed sale price.
What to know
HeriBase can help with identification and available reference information. An app estimate is not a guaranteed selling price; asking prices, guide values and completed sales are different types of evidence.
What to do
Confirm the country, denomination, date, mint mark and variety, then compare condition, sale date, currency and fees. For a questionable price, send platform support the result screenshot, clear photos of both sides and your specific concern. You can also request an in-app human appraisal after reviewing the fee and service scope. If a material question cannot be resolved from photos, consider an in-person examination.
What makes a coin valuable? ↗How can I tell whether a coin is rare or valuable? #
Scan your coin in HeriBase to identify its issue and check the mintage where available. Then assess surviving supply, collector demand, condition and variety against comparable sales. A low mintage is a useful rarity clue, but neither low production nor age alone guarantees a high value.
What to know
Mintage is the number originally produced, not the number surviving today or surviving in a particular grade. The documented HeriBase result for the 1909-S VDB cent shows 484,000, matching the references in our article. This verifies one displayed field, not the authenticity or value of every coin.
What to do
Scan both sides and confirm the date, mint mark and variety before using the displayed mintage. Compare the figure with a reference for that exact issue, then examine condition and recent comparable sales. If an important variety or condition detail is unclear, consider an in-app human appraisal after checking the fee.
What makes a coin valuable? ↗Why can coins with the same date have different values? #
The same year does not mean the same coin value. Mint mark and variety define the issue; grade, surface problems, copper color and strike details distinguish individual examples. Even coins with the same date and mint mark can sell differently because of these features, collector demand and sale conditions.
What to know
Our illustrated comparisons show three distinctions: 1943-D half dollars with different grades and CAC approval, 1909 VDB cents with RB versus RD color, and 1945 dimes with versus without Full Bands. More than one factor can differ, so a price gap is not a fixed premium for a single feature.
What to do
Match the date, mint mark, variety and strike type first. Then read the full grade and designations, inspect the same details in both photographs, and compare several recent sales on the same fee basis. Use a supported range rather than the highest result.
How condition and grading affect coin value ↗Can a coin identification app give my coin a professional grade? #
No. An app’s photo-based grade is a preliminary condition assessment, not a professional grading certificate. Wear, cleaning, contact marks and strike quality need careful examination, especially when a grade materially affects the price.
What to know
Wear, cleaning, contact marks and strike quality can affect an assessment. Any photo-based or app-generated grade should be treated as preliminary.
What to do
Check the full condition description before comparing prices. If the grade is important to a purchase or sale, consider an in-hand professional assessment.
Understand appraisal and grading ↗How can I estimate the value of my coin collection? #
Estimate a collection by identifying each coin, recording its quantity and condition, and researching comparable sales before adding the values. HeriBase can organize these records; the resulting estimate may differ from a buyer’s offer for the whole collection.
What to know
A reference total can differ from an offer for the entire collection because of selling costs, demand and the way the items are sold.
What to do
Record photographs, identifying details, quantities and condition notes. Use HeriBase’s collection tools to organize the records, then review each item’s comparable sales before adding the values.
Organize your collection ↗How do a subscription and an expert appraisal differ? #
HeriBase’s subscription covers the app benefits listed in the chosen plan. Human expert appraisal is a separate paid service reviewing the item and information you submit; it does not automatically provide an in-hand grading certificate or a guaranteed sale price.
What to know
Human expert appraisal is charged separately from the identification and collection subscription. A photo-based opinion is not an in-hand grading certificate or a guaranteed sale price.
What to do
Review the expert’s specialty, fee, response scope and delivery terms. Submit clear images of both sides and close-ups with a specific question.
Expert service fees and scope ↗Where can I start checking the value of a U.S. coin? #
Start by identifying both sides of your coin in HeriBase and reviewing the available reference value and item details. If the price seems inconsistent or its basis is unclear, you can request a paid expert appraisal in the app. Consider an in-hand examination when authenticity, condition or a specific variety cannot be resolved from photos.
What to know
An app reference price, an expert opinion and a completed sale are different things. Expert appraisal is a separate paid service. Professional services such as PCGS can examine and grade a coin in hand, but grading does not guarantee a selling price or a higher valuation.
What to do
Check the date, mint mark, variety and condition against the app result. For expert review, submit both sides, close-ups and a specific question about the estimate. If physical inspection is needed, review the service scope, fees and shipping arrangements before submitting the coin.
Try HeriBase identification ↗ Expert appraisal in HeriBase ↗ When to consider an in-hand assessment ↗How can I check whether my penny is worth more than face value? #
Check whether comparable pennies of the same country, date, mint mark, variety and condition have documented sales above face value. An old date or unusual appearance alone does not establish a premium, and damage is not automatically a mint error.
What to know
Age or unusual appearance alone does not establish a premium. Color, wear and surface problems can affect comparisons, and damage should not automatically be treated as a mint error.
What to do
Photograph both sides and any unusual detail. Use the identification as a starting point, then compare documented sales. Ask for specialist review if a variety or possible error remains unresolved.
Factors that affect coin value ↗Subscriptions & access
Can I identify coins with HeriBase for free? #
Yes. In the usage records documented in our app comparison, HeriBase provided three free identifications per day, with additional scans available by watching ads. Check the current allowance and ad availability in your app; these recorded terms are not a guarantee for every version or region.
What to know
Free identification is separate from a subscription trial. This scan allowance does not establish that every valuation feature or historical price record is free.
What to do
Try identification in the app, then review the included benefits before choosing paid access. Read our guide for free access, subscriptions and separate expert fees.
Free access and subscriptions ↗ HeriBase, CoinSnap and Coinara comparison ↗ Recorded free scans and subscription terms ↗Why am I seeing a subscription or trial offer? #
HeriBase may show an offer to start a trial or purchase subscription benefits. Seeing the offer alone does not mean you have been charged; accepting a trial may lead to paid renewal under the displayed terms.
What to know
A trial may renew into a paid subscription under the terms you accept.
What to do
Read the offer before confirming. To check an existing subscription or charge, use the billing provider and account shown on your receipt.
How do I cancel my subscription? #
Cancel HeriBase through the store or provider that bills you. For Apple purchases, open Settings → your name → Subscriptions; for Google Play purchases, open Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions. Select HeriBase and follow the cancellation steps using the purchasing account.
What to know
Use the account that made the purchase. Uninstalling the app does not cancel a Google Play subscription. Check the expiration information after cancellation.
What to do
Select Cancel Subscription on Apple or Cancel subscription on Google Play and complete the prompts. If the subscription is missing, check the billing provider and account on your receipt. Confirm the expiration information afterward.

How much does a HeriBase subscription cost? #
Our user guide documents a US$39.99 annual HeriBase offer and an illustrated three-day trial, but these are example terms, not a guaranteed current price for every user. Check your app and store confirmation for the actual price, trial eligibility and renewal conditions.
What to know
This is a documented offer, not a universal current price. Prices, trial eligibility and available plans may vary. The displayed US$3.33 per month is an annual-plan equivalent, not monthly billing.
What to do
Check your app’s current offer and store confirmation for the price, billing period and renewal terms. Expert appraisal is a separate purchase.

About HeriBase ↗Do I need an account, and what should I check before changing devices? #
You can start using HeriBase without completing registration. Before changing devices or reinstalling, confirm your profile’s sign-in method and how to recover your collection and history; a store purchase alone does not guarantee data recovery.
