Where to look on this series
2026 American Gold Eagle · obverse reference. Reference specimen; the selected year may differ.
Below the date
Look just below the date on the right of the obverse.

Match the position first. Use a light and magnifier; keep the coin unpolished.
This reference photo has a visible W mint mark. A missing or unclear letter on another specimen requires separate examination.
The circle and close-up identify the mark actually visible in this source photograph. Shared catalogue photographs do not independently authenticate the listed denomination, finish or specimen.

A location guide,
one detail at a time.
Heads or tails?
Obverse is the portrait side; reverse is the other side. The finder follows the date because some series moved their mint marks.
Letter or initials?
JS, FG and VDB are designers’ initials. A mint mark identifies a facility; it does not establish grade, rarity, value or authenticity.
Common questions

Is a coin with no mint mark an error?
Often it is normal: many Philadelphia issues were unmarked, and mint marks were omitted in 1965–1967. Some recognized missing-mark varieties exist, but the date, strike type and die diagnostics must match. A worn or unclear letter is not sufficient evidence.
Why does the picture show a different year?
The photo is a labelled reference for the same mint-mark location. It is not presented as your coin or as evidence of every version issued in your selected year. Compare the portrait and layout before applying the highlighted location.
Can the tool authenticate my mint mark?
No. This guide shows where to look and what letters mean. Altered or added marks, unusual surfaces and valuable varieties require expert examination.
What if my coin is not listed?
Choose from 24 series and program guides, or search 3751 supplied catalogue records by name, year, mint letter or catalogue code. Use the collector guides for other series.
