Maria Tallchief Quarter:2023 Value, Design and Collector Versions
Recognize the Tallchief quarter, distinguish the separate Native American dollar, and compare ordinary coins with collector issues.
In this article
What is the Maria Tallchief quarter worth?
A normal circulated Maria Tallchief quarter is worth 25 cents. It is the fifth 2023 American Women quarter and entered circulation on October 23, 2023. The reverse depicts Tallchief performing ballet; the front shows Washington and the date 2023. The dancer’s subject or unfamiliar lettering does not by itself make the coin rare.
Collector value depends on mint, finish and preservation. P and D circulation coins are clad, while S collector issues include regular strikes, clad Proofs and silver Proofs. An S mark alone does not establish silver. This quarter is also different from the 2023 Native American $1 coin honoring American Indian ballet dancers.
The 2023-P Maria Tallchief quarter

The ballerina behind the design
Maria Tallchief, an Osage dancer, became America’s first major prima ballerina. Her roles in Firebird and The Nutcracker helped define a celebrated career, and she was the first American to dance with the Paris Opera Ballet. The quarter connects that artistic achievement with Native American representation on circulating money.
Benjamin Sowards designed the reverse and Joseph Menna sculpted it. The image emphasizes movement rather than a conventional head-and-shoulders portrait: Tallchief appears in a ballet pose across the coin. Her name appears alongside Osage-language lettering. The lettering is intentional, not a production defect.
The circulation release was October 23, 2023. A public celebration followed in Tulsa on October 29; those dates describe different events. This was the tenth issue in the American Women Quarters program. The five-design 2023 quarter guide covers the other honorees without repeating their stories here.

Quarter or Native American dollar?
| Check | Maria Tallchief quarter | Native American $1 coin |
|---|---|---|
| Denomination | QUARTER DOLLAR | $1 |
| Front | Washington | Sacagawea with her child |
| Reverse | Tallchief performing ballet | American Indian ballet dancers; Tallchief is the central figure |
| Usual appearance | Silver-colored clad; silver Proof also exists | Golden-colored dollar alloy |
| Use this guide? | Yes | Use the dollar-series guide |
The dollar’s reverse places Tallchief among a wider group of dancers. Its larger golden appearance and $1 denomination are useful clues, but read both sides instead of identifying a coin from color alone. The Sacagawea and Native American dollar guide explains how the later dollar series differs from the original eagle reverse.
Read the mint mark, then identify the finish
P and D identify Philadelphia and Denver circulation issues. San Francisco’s S does not answer the finish or metal question by itself. A regular collector strike is distinct from a Proof, and Proofs were issued in both clad and silver forms. Packaging that belongs to the coin or reliable certification can resolve the specific product; a bright online photograph cannot.
Value by version: what comparison applies?
| Version | Metal | Condition | Value reference | What matters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| P or D circulation coin | Clad | Ordinary worn | $0.25 face value | Normal use, not a rarity claim |
| P regular strike | Clad | MS65 | PCGS guide $15 | Certified-grade retail reference, checked Oct. 19, 2026 |
| S regular collector strike | Clad | Uncirculated | Matching sold collector issue | Do not compare with silver Proofs |
| S clad Proof | Clad | Proof | Matching clad Proof grade | Surface quality and cameo contrast |
| S silver Proof | .999 silver | Proof | Matching silver Proof grade | Silver content, finish and preservation |
The MS65 figure is a guide reference for a specific Philadelphia grade, not a likely return on every quarter from a roll. Certification, handling and selling costs can be substantial relative to a modern coin’s value. Ordinary pocket change should not be priced from a high-grade holder listing.
What about Maria Tallchief quarter errors?
First compare the intended artwork. Osage characters, an unfamiliar ballet pose and small artist initials are normal design elements. Scratches, worn lettering or a discolored patch do not establish a mint error. A small die chip also does not automatically imply a major premium.
For a suspected mint-made feature, keep clear photographs of the full coin and the detail. A useful price comparison requires the same documented error and similar condition; a seller’s extraordinary asking price is not evidence of a sale. Use the coin appraisal guide if the feature warrants specialist examination.
Keep these distinctions clear
The Maria Tallchief quarter is a 2023, 25-cent coin; normal worn examples remain worth face value. Identify P, D or S, then separate regular strikes, clad Proofs and silver Proofs before comparing prices.
Do not confuse it with the Tallchief-related Native American dollar, or mistake the intended lettering for an error. For a basic 2023 design collection, this is one of five different reverses.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Maria Tallchief quarter rare?
The subject alone does not make a regular circulation coin rare. Normal worn P and D examples generally remain worth 25 cents; exceptional preservation and specific collector versions require separate comparisons.
When was the Maria Tallchief quarter released?
It entered circulation on October 23, 2023, as the fifth 2023 American Women quarter. The Tulsa celebration took place later, on October 29.
Is a Maria Tallchief quarter with an S mint mark silver?
Not necessarily. S collector issues include clad regular strikes and clad Proofs as well as silver Proofs. Identify the specific metal and finish instead of relying on the mint mark alone.
Is the Maria Tallchief quarter the same as the 2023 Native American dollar?
No. The quarter has Washington on the front and a 25-cent denomination. The separate Native American dollar shows Sacagawea on the front and honors American Indian ballet dancers on the reverse.
