2022 Quarters:Five Women, Five Designs and Value Checks
Identify all five 2022 American Women quarter designs, understand the shared Washington portrait, and distinguish pocket change from collector versions.
In this article
Quick answer
The five 2022 quarters honor Maya Angelou, Dr. Sally Ride, Wilma Mankiller, Nina Otero-Warren and Anna May Wong. They are the first year of the American Women Quarters program. The same right-facing Washington portrait appears on the front; the woman honored changes on the back.
A normal worn P or D example has a 25-cent face-value baseline. Uncirculated coins, S collector issues, Proofs, silver Proofs and verified errors need separate comparisons. A five-design collection needs five coins; collecting both Philadelphia and Denver requires ten.
The series story
The first program year placed literature, space science, tribal leadership, voting rights and cinema on circulating quarters. Rather than simply repeating five portraits, the designs use a bird, Earth, a Cherokee star, yucca flowers and marquee lights to explain the honorees’ contributions.
Fraser’s Washington portrait had been created for the 1932 quarter competition. Its appearance in 2022 gives the common front a history independent of the five reverses. Washington facing right is expected on these coins; it is not a reversed-portrait error.
The program continued for four years. The complete 2022–2025 gallery organizes all twenty themes, while the 2023 annual guide shows the next five designs.

Collecting & value
Build a design set before adding variants
Choose one example of each honoree for a five-coin set. If collecting both P and D, record the mint beside each design so that ten similar-looking coins are not mistaken for ten themes. S circulation-quality coins and Proofs expand a collection by product, not by new honorees.
Record year, honoree, mint and finish. A reverse can contain words or dates connected with a person’s story; the obverse carries the actual issue year. Retain original set information when available, especially for clad versus silver Proofs.
| Coin or collection | How to compare it |
|---|---|
| Ordinary worn P or D | 25¢ baseline; no rarity established by the honoree alone |
| 2022-P Maya Angelou, MS65 | PCGS guide: $10, checked Oct. 21, 2026; exact issue and grade only |
| Five-design set | Five quarters total $1.25 in face value; collector retail is a separate question |
| P and D design set | Ten coins total $2.50 in face value; condition and completeness affect retail |
| S collector issue / Proof | Match exact manufacture, metal and preservation before pricing |
The Maya MS65 figure is a retail-guide example, not a current buying offer or a price for the other four designs. It requires the stated grade; ordinary wear does not qualify. A roll’s asking price also cannot be assigned to a single loose quarter.
Compare unfamiliar features with the normal design
Mankiller’s star, Otero-Warren’s Spanish inscription and Wong’s dots are intentional design elements. None is an error merely because it differs from an older eagle quarter. Scratches, rim dents and discoloration can occur after minting.
For a potentially genuine production defect, photograph the complete coin, edge and specific feature before seeking an attribution. Do not clean it to improve the photograph. The surface guide and grading scale help separate alteration, wear and preservation.
Summary
Match the reverse to one of the five 2022 honorees, then read the date and mint on the shared front. Start worn circulation coins at 25 cents. Separate S products, silver Proofs, exceptional grades and attributed errors before comparing collector prices.
